If you sell fashion jewelry, the answer decides how many returns you’ll handle and how many repeat customers you’ll keep — so let’s settle it clearly, with no marketing spin.
Short answer: high-quality 316L stainless steel jewelry does not tarnish, rust, or turn skin green under normal wear — including showers, sweat, and swimming. The catch is that “stainless steel” is not one thing, and the plating on top matters just as much as the metal underneath. Here’s what actually determines whether a piece survives real life.
Why real stainless steel doesn’t tarnish
Tarnish is corrosion. It happens when the metal in a piece reacts with oxygen, moisture, and the sulfur in sweat or air. Cheap fashion jewelry tarnishes fast because it’s made from copper, brass, or zinc alloy that oxidizes quickly, especially once the thin plating wears through.
316L stainless steel is different. The “316L” grade contains chromium, which forms an invisible, self-repairing oxide layer on the surface. That layer is what blocks corrosion — even if the piece is scratched, the chromium re-seals it. The “L” means low carbon, which improves corrosion resistance further. It’s the same family of steel used in surgical implants and marine hardware, which is exactly why it holds up to daily wear.

Yes — 316L itself is effectively waterproof. Your customers can shower, sweat at the gym, and wash their hands without damaging the metal. Two sensible cautions worth passing on to buyers:
- Chlorine and salt water are harsher than tap water. Occasional swimming is fine; daily pool or ocean exposure will shorten the life of any plated finish over months, not days.
- Perfume and lotion should go on before the jewelry, not after. The issue isn’t the steel — it’s residue building up on the plating and dulling the shine.
The part most sellers miss: the plating
Here’s where quality really separates. Most gold-tone stainless steel jewelry isn’t solid gold color — it’s plated. And how it’s plated decides whether the gold look lasts two months or two years.
- Regular electroplating lays down a thin gold layer that wears off at friction points (ring bands, clasp edges) fairly quickly.
- Vacuum PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) bonds the color to the steel at a molecular level in a vacuum chamber. It’s far harder, more scratch-resistant, and dramatically more tarnish- and fade-resistant. This is the standard we use on SOQ pieces.
